Bone grafting and repair
BF+® is a macroporous biphasic resorbable ceramic composed of 60% hydroxyapatite and 40% tricalciumphosphate.

The BF+® totally interconnected porosity ranges from 60 to 80%. The mean pore diameter of 200 - 500 µm is compatible with human bone-cell size.

Main features
The great number of studies and papers published on both HA (hydroxyapatite) and (ßTCP) tricalcium phosphate show if need be the interest of such materials. For a long time these were the only calcium phosphates tested in vivo and implanted in humans. Their chemical composition close to that of bone favors biocompatibility and induces optimal osteointegration. The use of such interconnected porous biphasic ceramics (HA/TCP), as synthetic bone graft substitutes is one of the answers to safe and efficient repair of bone defects and for bone grafting.

Biocompatibility
Implanted in sheep condyles these ceramics have evidenced excellent integration in both cortical and cancellous bone.

1 - Osteoconduction
After 6 weeks, a centripetal progressing neoformed bone can be observed enveloping the surface of the BF+® graft and having progressed through the interconnected macroporous structure to the centre of the graft.
2 - Osteointegration
After 12 weeks, the BF+ graft is completely colonized by bone tissue covering the complete graft with no interposition of fibrous tissues.
3- Resorption - remodelling
After 12 weeks the macroporous structure of the graft is seen as a blurred outline and the resorption of the ceramic graft can be observed. Bone remodelling is a global phenomena; active osteoclasts are visible both at the ceramic surface and on the bone.
